In the ever rolling ball of destruction that is my life, we go to open bank accounts here today. I forgot my checkbook so I go outside to use the ATM. It says, not only do I not have money in it, but that I'm $560 under balance. This comes as a surprise because we put over $5,000 in it before we left Omaha and as of last night's balance of the checkbook, we had just under $5,000.
So I get a call from my bank saying that Discover card, whom I've had this ongoing debt with and taken to court and all that jazz, had sent them a letter of garnishment for $10,000. They took everything out of that. Also, since the banks were closed this weekend, all our transactions for this weekend went through after it had been taken out. So that put the account under $560.
The fucking thing that pisses me off is that I had been thinking about filing for bankruptcy for a couple of years, but since I met and married Jeanne, we decided not to and worked out a budget to pay it all off (along with the rest of our debt off) in five years.
Not too mention that Discover hadn't contacted me in months for anything and WE contacted them to work something out so something like this wouldn't happen. We also got separate accounts for this reason. So they sent us a letter saying that we could pay a lump sum at the end of the year, since we couldn't immediately pay what they were asking. We started, anyway, paying what we could except for the last month because we couldn't make the payment anymore.
So us trying to work with them fucked us over. This is the same thing that happened two years ago. I moved to Omaha and couldn't find work for three months. I hadn't missed a payment prior to this. I had, but I immediately paid it with the late fees. So they started being dicks and calling me every day about payments, and I kept telling them my situation and then there's them, being dicks and not helping out.
Finally I just said fuck it, I'm not paying it back and I'm filing bankruptcy. Then I got a call from someone there one day and she was working with me, and she said that they have rules stating that they can't offer alternative methods of payments and stuff unless they absolutely have to. She cut my payments by more than half which was my complaint for a while. The monthly payments were too high and I couldn't afford it after not working for a while.
So since she was being very accomodating to me, I worked with her, just like this past time. Then the very next day someone from collections called me saying that I need to start making payments so I said, "I talked to [so and so] yesterday and worked out a payment plan, so it's taken care of."
He then told me something to the effect of, "It doesn't matter who you talked to, we can't do that, you have to pay the full amount."
I told him that that's stupid and as a result I won't pay. It seems that everytime I seem to want to work with them, they fuck me over. This is so stupid.
The only reason that I had all that money in my account is that Jeanne lost her card and was going to cancel the account anyway, so rather than have all her money in her account and being inaccessible, she wrote me a check and was going to open the account today. So that's what we did and this happens.
We were able to have Joe deposit money into my account to bring it back to a zero balance so I could close it. We borrowed $2,000 from Jeanne's mom and I'm getting a $1,000 advance from work. So that'll help get us through, but I'm still fucking pissed about the $5,000.
